While finally planting a row of Kolhrabi and one row of mini (“Gonzalas” variety) cabbage in the garden, I heard the barn swallows‘ welcome little voices above me. I just stood there and watched them for awhile. Darting and twisting in tight patterns with each other, doing their joyful acrobatics in the sky above. To me, it’s unofficially summer when they return. I haven’t noticed much of a bug population yet, but they seem to wait to build nests till there is plenty of food for their babies. It also made me think that I better get the rest of the cool weather vegetables planted because if the swallows are back, there’s not much “cool” weather left!
