Sunshine Crate is a mystery clothing and accessory box service that provides “young, unique, fashionable clothing at an affordable price.” They release a limited number of crates every 3-4 weeks or so in two sizes: 3 item “Mini Box” for $50 (2 clothing surprises and 1 accessory) and a 5-6 item “Master Box” for $98 (4-5 clothing surprises and 1 accessory), plus $5 shipping for each. This is a change from the pricing in my July review — they have since upgraded the overall quality and added several higher-end clothing brands, as well as redesigned the website and made several other small tweaks. It’s a huge improvement!
Note: Sunshine Crate operates very much like Golden Tote but with one key difference: Sunshine Crate is a mystery box, not a stylist box. You can leave some basic notes, like “I don’t wear shorts” or “I prefer silver jewelry over gold”, or make a request from the Facebook group (she often reveals some of the surprise items there), but it’s basically a big gamble. You must be up for fun!
Now on to the review — here’s what I got:
Clothing surprise 1: Love In cardigan Love! I requested a red and white cardigan from the Facebook group and got this instead, but that’s okay because it’s awesome. Soft, comfy, fits great. I am all about the cardigans lately so happy happy.
Clothing surprise 2: Stylebook Striped Top Very soft and super comfy! Right up my alley in theory, but in reality it’s totally too short for my long torso — if I put my arms up I flash belly button! Not good, ha.
Clothing surprise 3: Pink Owl Embellished Jersey Cardigan I love it! I think… I requested this but didn’t realize the elbow patches were sequins. I am not a sparkly girl at all normally, but it has such a flattering and drapey fit it is growing on me. It’s a very lightweight and stretchy t-shirt material, and is very long. I think the sequins might be a good step outside my comfort zone. Could be great for the holidays.
Clothing surprise 4: Pink Owl Black & White Maxi w/Fringe This is a sad and total bust. It actually fits pretty good, but it’s just not me at all. Plus this crate was ordered in September, and this is Minnesota, so summer is definitely over. Boo.
Extra goodies! If there’s one thing Sunshine Crate is really good at it’s throwing in extra and unexpected surprise goodies. In the mix here: An eyeliner w/sharpener, a body lotion sample w/Smartie(mmm), an “at home facial” sample, and an awesome smelling tealight/candle sample.
Sarah likes to support women-owned small businesses and always finds a few willing to include samples in the crates. So fun!
Summary: I’m happy! I got two cardigans I really love, plus a cute hat. Considering the complete ‘mystery’ concept (i.e. extremely limited style profile) this turned out well. The “upgrade” Sarah did recently is noticeable — the clothes are of better quality, and a little less crazy in style (except for that Pink Owl maxi, ha), and the accessories are better as well (the hat really is nice).
Overall I think the crates are a decent value, and an awesome adventure if you’re open-minded about fashion and up for working with new pieces that you would not have otherwise chosen for yourself. I for one find value in the surprise itself, and the possibility of discovering something new, and for that Sunshine Crate is great.
